"It was good because in 124 years of existence of the General Hospital of Benguela, for the first time, a partial hip prosthesis surgery was performed on a 42-year-old girl (...) it is to be praised", said the director of the aforementioned hospital, Divane Marcolino.
The surgery was performed last Saturday, on a 42-year-old patient who suffered from a subcapital fracture of the femur that had been progressing for more than three months.
According to Angop, the operation lasted half an hour and was successfully carried out, for the first time, by the HGB orthopedics team in collaboration with RF Medical Angola, with more than 14 members of the Benguela hospital orthopedics team and other doctors from RF Medical involved in this operation.
Regarding the patient's condition, according to doctors, she is clinically stable in a ward at that hospital.
The hospital director, speaking to Angop, showed pride in this achievement and recalled that beforehand the patient would need to be transferred abroad or to a reference hospital unit in the capital.
However, he said that currently, the public health domain is not carrying out this surgery in Luanda, except in the province of Cabinda, in which the prosthesis operation is also carried out.
Recognizing that HGB is growing and consolidating its position as a reference in terms of complex surgeries in the country, the manager assured that, soon, a project on orthopedic operations for the placement of partial hip prostheses will begin, prioritizing elderly patients, that is, people over 60 years old.
In his view, people over 60 can benefit from these partial dentures, which can increase their quality of life for another five or ten years.
Furthermore, he added that the HGB will also begin to gradually perform surgeries with complete dentures on other younger patients, that is, those of working age.
"The idea is to introduce complete dentures to younger people, because they are still productive groups to help with the socio-economic development of the country", pointed out the person in charge who, quoted by Angop, said that as this type of prosthesis has greater durability, the option is justified of this working-age population regarding the investment to be made in this field.
