"We renew here the expression of our deepest condolences for the physical passing of this man who marks the history of Angola, Africa and the world", declared the President of the National Assembly, Austelino Correia, at the beginning of the second day of work of the ordinary parliamentary session.
The vote of condolence was presented this morning by the parliamentary group of the African Party for the Independence of Cape Verde (PAICV, opposition), which recalled the journey of José Eduardo dos Santos, from the anti-colonial struggle to the presidency of Angola, underlining the support he gave to the over the years to Cape Verde, namely during the volcanic eruptions on the island of Fogo.
"The man passes, the works remain", said the parliamentary leader of the PAICV, João Baptista Pereira, recalling the "friend" from Cape Verde.
The other parties represented in parliament, Movement for Democracy (MpD, majority) and União Caboverdiana Independente e Democrática (UCID), subscribed to the vote of condolence, with all deputies observing a minute of silence during the morning proceedings after its approval.
José Eduardo dos Santos died on July 8, aged 79, in a clinic in Barcelona, Spain, after weeks of hospitalization and the government decreed seven days of national mourning.
