Family and State Representatives “negotiate” José Eduardo dos Santos’ funeral

The family of José Eduardo dos Santos and representatives of the Angolan state in Barcelona are directly discussing the conditions for the burial and funeral of the former head of state, a source close to the case told Lusa.

According to the same source, the executive has given security guarantees regarding the transfer of the body and the presence of all family members, some of whom are involved in legal proceedings, and the burial of the body in a cemetery in Angola, as the objective is to create conditions to house the mortal remains in a pantheon.

The first meeting took place on Saturday and was attended by Angolan delegations and family members, being marked by the absence of Tchizé dos Santos, one of the eldest daughters and who is against any agreement with the government in the sense of the father's body to be sent to Luanda before the elections, and his son José Filomeno dos Santos "Zenu" who is in Angola, awaiting the decision on the appeal he filed after being sentenced to five years in prison.

The meeting, which lasted about an hour and a half, took place in the house where José Eduardo dos Santos lived – the same place where the meeting will take place this Monday – and was attended by his wife, Ana Paula dos Santos and their three children. with the former president, another son, Joess dos Santos, participating by videoconference Isabel dos Santos, the eldest, and Jose Eduardo Paulino dos Santos "Coreon Du", brother of Tchizé dos Santos, as well as six nephews and one of the sisters of Jose Eduardo dos Santos, Martha dos Santos.

It will have been an opportunity to present the executive's proposals, which the brothers should analyze on Sunday, alone, to meet again this Monday with the Angolan delegations, which include members of the executive: the Minister of State and Head of the Military House, Francisco Furtado, the Minister of Foreign Affairs, Téte Antonio, the Ambassador of Angola to Spain and the Secretary of the President of the Republic for International Relations and Justice, led by the Attorney General of the Republic, Helder Pitta Grós.

According to the source contacted by Lusa, guarantees were given as to the safety conditions for the transfer of the mortal remains and the transport of the entire family that is in Spain to Angola.

The family, in turn, must indicate the location in Angola and the conditions for holding the funeral of the former head of state, who has several family members on a collision course with the executive, due to the legal proceedings and alleged persecution that the eldest daughters – Isabel and Tchizé – claim to be victims.

For now, "the possibility of the burial being carried out in a cemetery in Angola has also been discussed and discarded", with the decision having been made to start the preparation of a memorial where the remains of the deceased will be deposited, which will be transformed into a national pantheon.

"While this is taking place, guarantees were given that the body would not be buried, but in a sarcophagus in a place to be indicated by the family", says the same source. As for the date for the funeral, "it takes place as soon as the body is in Angola, without any burial".

In addition to the agreement with the family, the release of the body is also dependent on a decision by the Spanish court on the injunction brought by the eldest daughters to prevent the body from leaving Spain.

The same source indicated that the autopsy had already been carried out and that the report should be delivered to the court and advanced that for this Monday's meeting "everything is being done" so that Tchizé dos Santos and "Zenu" also participate in the latter of remote mode.
