In a note shared by the provincial secretary of the Union for the Total Independence of Angola (UNITA) in Luanda, Nelito Ekuikui, on his Facebook page, the party also addresses "the deepest feelings of condolence to family, friends and all Angolans who directly or indirectly are affected by this news of deep sadness".

UNITA, the main opposition party, fought a hard battle against the government forces of the MPLA during a long civil war of almost three decades, with its founder and leader, Jonas Savimbi, dying in combat in 2002, paving the way for the agreements of peace that would be celebrated a few months later.

The two parties were preparing to measure forces in the capacity to mobilize the electorate this Saturday in Luanda, still in the pre-campaign for the electoral race, with political activities having been canceled due to the death of the former head of state.
