PGR arrests more than 20 officers of the Presidents Security House in Cuando Cubango

The Attorney General's Office (PGR) arrested more than 20 officials, including the commander of the President's Security House in Cuando Cubango province, the local press reported Tuesday.

:

These arrests, made as part of operation "Caranguejo", which began following the arrest in Luanda of a major of the President's Security House, found with large sums of money in euros, dollars and kwanzas, kept in suitcases at his residence, were confirmed by the spokesman of the PGR, Álvaro João.

"The same [commander of the President of the Republic's Security House in Cuando Cubango] was arrested and proceedings continue to find out other people involved," said Álvaro João, speaking to Rádio Nacional de Angola.

The public broadcaster, citing a source from the PGR, said that the PGR, through its National Directorate of Investigation and Criminal Action, made more than 20 arrests, including the commander of the Security House of the President of the Republic in Cuando Cubango, Colonel Manuel Correia.

Among those arrested is also the president of the Cuando Cubango Football Club, Captain Atanásio Lucas José, and six officers linked to the staff and management of the Security House in Cuando Cubango.

During the arrest, were also found and seized large sums of money in kwanzas stored in containers.

The operation is led by officers of the DNIAP in Luanda, who will remain in Menongue, capital of Cuando Cubango, for the next few days.

The PGR announced last May 24 that a case was opened involving officers of the Angolan Armed Forces assigned to the President of the Republic's Security House, on suspicion of committing crimes of embezzlement, retention of currency, criminal association and others.

The note from the PGR stressed that in the scope of this process, monetary values were seized "in hard cash, kept in boxes and suitcases, in the order of millions, in US dollars, in euros and in kwanzas, as well as residences and vehicles.

The chief of finance of the musical band of the Presidency of the Republic, Major Pedro Lussati, was arrested in possession of two suitcases with ten million dollars and four million euros, supposedly trying to leave the country.

Following the investigation, the President of the Republic exonerated seven officers from his House of Security and dismissed the head and Minister of State, Pedro Sebastião.
