Covid-19: Africa registers nearly 158,000 deaths in more than 6.2 million cases

Africa registers 157,967 deaths due to covid-19, a total of 6,236,745 cases of infection with the new coronavirus since the start of the pandemic, according to official regional data released this Monday.

According to the Center for Disease Control and Prevention of the African Union (Africa CDC), the number recovered is 5,437,867.

Southern Africa remains the most affected region on the continent, with 2,979,873 cases and 80,809 deaths associated with covid-19. In this region is the country most affected by the pandemic, South Africa, which accounts for 2,295,095 cases and 66,859 deaths.

North Africa, which succeeds Southern Africa in covid-19 numbers, reached 1,785,804 infected with the SARS-CoV-2 virus and 51,198 deaths associated with the disease.

East Africa counts 766,566 infections and 16,220 deaths, and the West Africa region has passed 500,000 cases of infection (506,355) and registers 6624 deaths. Central Africa has the fewest cases of infection and deaths, with 198,147 and 3,116 respectively.

Egypt, the second African country with more fatalities after South Africa, registers 16,446 deaths and 283,703 infected, followed by Tunisia, with 17,527 deaths and 546,233 cases, and Morocco, which accounts for the second highest number of infections in the entire continent, 557,632 cases, but fewer deaths than the two previous countries, with 9450 deaths associated with the disease.

Among the most affected countries are Ethiopia, with 4357 fatalities and 277,696 infections, and Algeria, with 3938 deaths and 153,309 infected.

In relation to Portuguese-speaking countries, Mozambique registers 1118 deaths and 99,412 cases of infection accumulated since the beginning of the pandemic, and Angola accounts for 957 deaths associated with the disease and 40,805 accumulated infections.

Cape Verde registers 295 deaths associated with the disease and 33,302 infections, Equatorial Guinea 123 deaths and 8828 cases, Guinea-Bissau registers 73 deaths and 4052 infected and São Tomé and Príncipe 37 deaths and 2,400 infections.

The first covid-19 case in Africa appeared in Egypt on February 14, 2020, and Nigeria was the first country in sub-Saharan Africa to report cases of infection, on February 28th.
