Covid-19: Angola with five deaths and 203 new cases in 24 hours

Angola recorded 203 new cases of covid-19 in 24 hours, as well as five deaths and 36 recoveries from the disease, public health officials announced Thursday.

Of the new cases, 61 were registered in the province of Luanda, 56 in Lunda Norte, 38 in Cunene, 24 in Moxico, eight in Huambo, four in Huila, four in Zaire, three in Bié, two in Lunda Sul and one each in Malanje, Cabinda and Kwanza Norte, aged between 10 months and 74 years, with 113 males and 90 females, said the Secretary of State for Public Health, Franco Mufinda, in a statement.

According to the health authorities five deaths were registered, of which two in Cunene, two in Huila and one in Luanda, with the victims, three women and two men, between 35 and 88 years old.

In the same period 36 people were also considered recovered from the disease, of which 11 in Benguela, eight in Malanje, seven in Luanda, five in Namibe and five in Moxico, between 3 months and 64 years.

Angola now totals 40,530 cases since the pandemic began, including 951 deaths and 34,620 recovered from the disease, with 4959 cases still active.

Among the active cases, eight are in critical condition (four less than on Wednesday) and nine are in serious condition (two more than in the previous balance).

Laboratories processed 4859 samples in the last 24 hours, bringing the total to 766,922 samples, with a cumulative positivity rate of 5.3 percent.

The covid-19 pandemic has caused at least 4,061,908 deaths worldwide, among more than 188.3 million cases of infection with the new coronavirus, according to the most recent tally by Agence France-Presse.

According to the latest data from the African Union's Centers for Disease Control and Prevention, the continent has counted more than six million cases since the pandemic began, including more than 153,000 deaths.

The respiratory disease is caused by the SARS-CoV-2 coronavirus, detected in late 2019 in Wuhan, a city in central China, and currently with variants identified in countries such as the United Kingdom, India, South Africa, Brazil and Peru.
