BNA is finalizing solution for Banco Económico

The deputy governor of the Banco Nacional de Angola (BNA), Rui Miguéns, said that the central bank is finalizing the solution for the recapitalization of Banco Económico, without committing to deadlines, but indicating that it will happen this year.

Rui Miguêns added, on the sidelines of the presentation of the study by Deloitte Angola "Banca under Analysis", that the necessary values, which were calculated based on the Asset Quality Assessment (AQA), promoted in 2019 by the BNA, need to be constantly reassessed because, in the meantime, Banco Económico – which emerged after the bankruptcy of Banco Espírito Santo Angola (BESA) – continued to operate, without mentioning the amounts.

"With regard to the recapitalization program, we have (at the level of the BNA) an idea of how the bank can be recapitalized. We are concluding this study and very soon we will report it, the solution is still being calibrated to understand all the contours "he said, declining to reveal more details.

"The only thing we can say is that we are going to look for a solution that is balanced and that takes into account the interests of everyone, whether customers, shareholders, or other bank 'stakeholders', which allows the bank to recover and function properly normal and consistent," he declared.

Last month, Moody's downgraded Banco Económico's rating to Caa3, by the time the bank is taking to finalize its recapitalization process, justified by "exogenous factors", namely the low oil price .

The study to identify solutions to "save" Banco Económico began in 2019, after the disclosure of the results of the quality of this bank's assets, and the process was due to end in 2020, but due to the covid-19 pandemic the deadlines have been changed.

The president of Deloitte Angola, José Barata, considered that, despite the decrease in results, in 2020 "the [financial] system as a whole continued to have positive results", despite the performance of the Savings and Credit Bank (BPC). ).

On the positive side, he highlighted the increase in customer deposits and growing transactions through electronic payment methods.
