Use of electronic payment terminals increased by 13 percent in 2020

The use of automatic payment terminals in Angola increased by 13 percent last year, driven by the pandemic context, according to a study by Deloitte “Banca em Analysis” which also highlights the 820 percent growth of the Multicaixa Express application.

The report, released this Tuesday, reveals that Angolans increasingly adhere to electronic means of payment, maintaining the growth trend seen in recent years in the use of automatic payment terminals (TPA), contrary to what happened with the use of automatic teller machines (ATM), "which is justified given the pandemic context experienced in 2020, with a reduction in the handling of physical money".

The number of Automated Teller Machines (ATMs) registered a very slight growth of 0.7 percent (from 3125 in 2019 to 3148 in 2020) while Automatic Payment Terminals (TPA) registered an increase of 13 percent.

The number of ATMs increased residually, while the number of TPAs settled at 130,502 terminals in 2020, 15,290 more than in 2019. With regard to the number of transactions, in 2020 there was a decrease of approximately 0.9 percent compared to 2019 in ATMs, contrary to what was seen in TPA, which grew by 15 percent, a situation explained by the impacts of covid-19 on these payment channels.

As for Multicaixa Express, an interbank payment application provided by EMIS (the entity responsible for the Multicaixa network) has been gaining increasing popularity: after recording 19.6 million transactions in 2019, last year, the application registered a significant increase for 179.6 million transactions, that is, an increase of about 820 percent.
The report also highlights the evolution of transactions and amounts associated with electronic payments of taxes to the State.

In 2019, around 2.1 million transactions of this nature were registered, a number that increased to 2.3 million transactions (+9 percent), while the amounts increased from 1 132 357 million kwanzas in 2019 to 1 750 455 million kwanzas last year, reflecting an increase of 55 percent.

The study focused on 26 banks that make up the national financial system.

The report did not include Banco Económico, as the respective financial statements for the year 2020 were not available at the date of this study.
