Digital banking could become a reality in the next two years

The creation of a digital bank may become a reality in the country. Márcio Miguel, a master in stock market and blockchain specialist, argues that the digital bank should benefit people who use conventional banks only to receive and send money, believing that in two years the digital bank will be able to "bank" more than 100,000 citizens.

Speaking to Rádio Nacional de Angola (RNA), the specialist said that two years ago they started a project that involves "financial education and goes all the way to developing a digital bank".

"We in Angola have more than 10 million unbanked people, added to the banked people, the citizen who has a bank account but uses it only to receive and send money, we reach a number of almost 18 million nowadays", he informed.

Márcio Miguel predicts that by 2030, half the population will be "unbanked."

"Through research and surveys we were able to realize that there are some problems that start with the lack of communication, which goes from the financial institutions to the population. People don't have confidence in banks, and banks don't make people have this confidence, this relationship, so that they can truly impact the lives of citizens," he considered.

The specialist believes that in two years, digital banking will be able to "bank" more than 100,000 citizens: "We, with digital banking, believe that in the first two years we will be able to bank more than 100,000 people through technology, through the use of technological resources that allow this access in a simplified way".

Currently it is possible to make a purchase from a cell phone, he said, adding that it will be possible to reach the "public through the cell phone itself".

According to Márcio Miguel, quoted by RNA, citizens will have the ability to open an account on the cell phone, "register, have access to a credit card, a debit card without leaving home."

"The whole operation, both internal and functional, is all digital. But for this to happen there is a need for us to have regulations, to have control over all this, which clearly depends on our central bank," he added.
