"The decision is not to restart classes on Monday. The principle is to continue to monitor the situation and, in due course, return to a new pronouncement on the matter", the ruler advanced in a press conference in Luanda.

This was one of the issues addressed in a working meeting to assess the epidemiological situation chaired this Tuesday by the President of the Republic, João Lourenço, "having been given indications to the competent bodies to, in the coming days, in principle on Wednesday, publish an act announcing the decision.

Classes in general and university education in Angola were suspended in March, before the President declared a state of emergency, which took place between 27 March and 25 May, followed on 26 May by a public disaster.

The decree establishing the public calamity provided for the resumption of activity in higher education and secondary education from 13 July, although "dependent on the evolution of the epidemiological situation".

Health Minister Silvia Lutucuta declared at the press conference that "there is no pushing game" when it comes to the return to school, as it is a concerted strategy between the various ministerial departments.

Asked about the possibility of returning to the country, whose borders have been closed since 20 March, Angolan citizens on humanitarian flights, Adão de Almeida said that the priority is to create the conditions to gradually repatriate Angolan citizens who are in some countries with difficulties to return.

"Flights have been made in that direction, the last ones to Zambia and Zimbabwe and the return of citizens in other places is under permanent analysis", he replied.

The minister added that flights to allow fellow citizens to return must be phased in according to quarantine capacity, with a view to reducing the import of covid-19 cases.

"The competent authorities, as the schedule is made, will announce to the citizens that the flights will take place", he stressed.

The country has a total of 386 cases of infection with the new coronavirus, of which 21 deaths and 117 recovered.
