Chess Olympics are played online. Angolans start the games Wednesday

It is already from Wednesday that the national chess team begins its participation in the Olympics - which this year, for the first time since the event was created, are held online due to the covid-19 pandemic.

The national team, which is part of group 4, will play between 29 July and 2 August together with 37 other countries. To these will be added the 12 qualifiers of the competition that takes place among the 32 teams classified in the 2018 edition.

After this phase, according to the International Federation (FIDE), the 50 teams qualified in the first phase will be divided into five groups of 10 countries. Here only the first three qualifiers will advance to the next phase - already composed of 35 competitors.

The same format will be applied again in the following stages until they reach group 1, where the best qualifiers of the 2018 Olympics, which took place in Georgia, and the five best qualified countries in each continent, according to the international ranking.

In Africa, Angola is out of the best positioned. According to Angop, the best African countries selected by raking are Egypt, Morocco, South Africa, Zimbabwe and Algeria.

In total, there will be 40 teams competing for a place in the play-offs. These teams will be divided into four groups of 10 countries each. The top three teams will go into the play-offs. The 12 selected teams will play the round of 16, semi-finals and the final.

Each team is composed of six players and six substitutes. In this case, Angola is composed by the players Sérgio Miguel, David, Esperança Caxita, Ednásia Júnior, Lutuima Amaro and Jemima Paulo and the substitutes Manuel Alberto, Vanderson Dias, Delfina João, Luzia Píres, Domingos Júnior and Renelsa António.

A total of 163 countries participate in the tournament.
