Covid-19: death toll in Africa rises to 12,206 in over 522,000 cases

The number of deaths in Africa due to covid-19 rose this Thursday to 12,206, plus 251 in the last 24 hours, in about 522,000 cases, according to the latest data on the pandemic on the continent.

According to the Centre for Disease Control and Prevention of the African Union (Africa CDC), the number of infected has risen to 522,104, up 14,018 in the last 24 hours, while the number recovered is this Thursday of 254,361, up 9293.

Southern Africa has the highest number of cases (233,016) and counts 3724 deaths, the vast majority concentrated in South Africa, the country with the highest number of deaths and the most infected throughout the continent, with 224,665 cases and 3602 deaths.

North Africa leads the way in the number of deaths (4994), with 117,381 infections.

West Africa accounts for 1492 deaths out of 89,941 infections, East Africa has 1186 deaths and 42,817 cases, while Central Africa has 810 deaths out of 38,949 infections.

After South Africa, Egypt is the second country with more deaths, with this Thursday 3564 deaths in 78,304 cases of infection, followed by Algeria with 968 deaths and 16,879 infected.

Among the five countries most affected is also Nigeria, with 684 deaths, this Thursday having passed the 30,000 cases (30,249), and Sudan, with 636 deaths, this Thursday having passed the 10,000 cases barrier (10,084).

Among Portuguese-speaking African countries, Guinea-Bissau has the highest number of infections and deaths, with 1790 cases and 25 deaths.

Cape Verde has 1542 infections and 18 deaths, while Mozambique has 1071 infections and eight deaths.

São Tomé e Príncipe has 724 cases and 13 deaths and Angola has 396 confirmed cases of covid-19 and 22 deaths.

Equatorial Guinea, which is part of the Community of Portuguese Speaking Countries (CPLP), has had 3071 cases and 51 deaths for several days, according to Africa CDC.

The first case of covid-19 in Africa appeared in Egypt on 14 February and Nigeria was the first country in sub-Saharan Africa to register cases of infection on 28 February.

The covid-19 pandemic has already claimed more than 545,000 lives and infected more than 11.9 million people in 196 countries and territories, according to a report by the French agency AFP.

The disease is transmitted by a new coronavirus detected at the end of December in Wuhan, a city in central China.
