Covid-19: Angola increases to 15 deaths with Luanda close to community transmission

Angola has recorded seven more cases of covid-19 in the last 24 hours, including two deaths, the Secretary of State for Public Health announced, warning that the pandemic in Luanda is close to community transmission.

According to Franco Mufinda, the new cases, two women and five men aged between 19 and 83, are of local transmission.

The two deaths, both male, refer to a 74-year-old citizen who was admitted to the Exclusive Economic Zone, with hypertension and who was part of the critically ill, and a 57-year-old diabetic who suffered a cardiorespiratory arrest upon arrival at the Luanda Medical Center clinic.

Angola thus adds 291 infected with the new coronavirus, of which 15 died, 93 recovered and 178 were active.

Franco Mufinda said that there are currently 43 cases of covid-19 with no known link, all in the province of Luanda, which is close to a scenario of community transmission.

"There are only a few cases left to go into the community transmission scenario," he said, adding that health authorities are investigating the "conglomerates" that are taking place in Luanda to uncover the transmission chains.

"Only when you reach 100 and you don't unravel the transmission chain, then you can talk about community transmission," stressed Franco Mufinda, calling for increased protection measures.

Besides Luanda, Angola only has cases of covid-19 in Kwanza Norte (four cases).

The covid-19 pandemic has already caused more than 511,000 deaths and infected more than 10.5 million people in 196 countries and territories, according to a report by the French agency AFP.

In Africa, there are 10,151 confirmed deaths in almost 405,000 infected in 54 countries, according to the latest pandemic statistics on the continent.
