Police accused of preventing a demonstration demanding "legalization" of PRA-JÁ Serving Angola

A few dozen young people assigned to the PRA-JA Servir Angola political project in Luanda said this Thursday they had been "prevented and assaulted" by National Police officers when they wanted to march to the Constitutional Court (TC).

"Demand the legalization" of the Party of the Angolan Renaissance - Together for Angola - Servir Angola (PRA-JA Servir Angola), led by politician Abel Chivukuvuku, before that judicial instance was the motto of the protest, called one day after the plenary of the Constitutional Court (TC) rejected an appeal filed by the political formation that tries to legalize itself since last year.

Concentrating on Thursday morning, on the square of the Santa Ana cemetery in Luanda, the more than thirty young people wielded several posters with slogans such as "we want the legalization of PRA-JÁ" and "no political persecution.

To Lusa, the demonstrators, who displayed flags and T-shirts with the face of their leader, told that their march was aborted by the "strong police apparatus" on the spot, stating that one of the members of the group "was arrested following assaults.

"The Constitutional Court is making it difficult to legalize our political party PRA-JÁ, that is why we are here on the street claiming and demonstrating on this issue", said Osvaldo Rebelo, in an interview with Lusa.

According to the young activist of PRA-JÁ Servir Angola, the police "prevented the march for lack of authorization", regretting, however, the "apprehension and aggression" of which he says a leader of the demonstration was targeted.

"Our comrade has already been beaten and taken by the national police, which is unfair", he protested.

Laurina André, one of the demonstrators, said she was outraged by the new lead in Abel Chivukuvuku's political project, considering the court's decision as "a ploy to slow down the strength of PRA-JÁ".

She said, "We are here expressing our indignation to the people, we want it to be legalised because we follow all the legal procedures".

Unfortunately, he noted, the police "have already taken one of our comrades, left here beaten and handcuffed, we do not know why and we are outraged by the police's stance.

A considerable number of police officers were present on the scene.

António Luís, also a signatory of the political project, considered the TC's decision to be reprehensible, stating that they will continue to force the court to change its behaviour.

"Because all our attestations have been legalised by the municipal administrations", he argued, lamenting also the "arrest of the municipal secretary of Kilamba-Kiaxi".

"But we will continue to protest," assured the young demonstrator.
