Ana Paula de Carvalho highlights the urgent need to tackle the plastic problem

The fight against plastic pollution is an environmental challenge that is considered urgent, given that it is essential for the health of the population, as well as for a sustainable future for the country. This is the view of the Minister of the Environment, Ana Paula de Carvalho, who, when speaking at the opening of the 2nd National Conference on the State of Sanitation in Angola (ANGOLASAN2), highlighted the fact that microplastics have already been found in fish, drinking water, salt and even human blood around the world.

According to the minister, ANGOLASAN2 – which took place this Thursday, the day that marks the International Environment Day – is a start to changing attitudes, as well as a moment to courageously analyze and humbly listen to what needs to be changed, to put aside indifference and accept political guidelines, writes Angop.

In this sense, the minister highlighted the need for a National Strategy to Combat Plastic Pollution, which has explicit objectives and stipulated deadlines, becoming an efficient management and recycling mechanism in the country.

Considering the strategic collaboration with the private sector and the international community to be opportune in order to promote the circular economy, the minister also considered that environmental education should begin in the family nucleus, without disregarding educational institutions.

According to the Minister of the Environment, the fight against plastic pollution also represents an opportunity to transform, innovate and generate jobs, in addition to serving as a driving force for new business models, aiming to strengthen ecological citizenship and build a cleaner and more vibrant country.

Among other aspects, the Minister took advantage of her speech to warn of the fact that the world is facing a risk to biodiversity, food security, the blue economy and people's health, given that every minute the equivalent of a truckload of garbage is dumped into the sea, writes Angop.

The President of the National Assembly, Carolina Cerqueira, also did not let this date go unnoticed and, in a message alluding to Environment Day, reiterated her commitment to protecting the environment.

"Today we are called to urgent action in the face of environmental degradation, climate change, water scarcity and the growing pressure on our ecosystems. Reality demands more than good intentions from us; it demands courageous decisions, effective public policies and active environmental citizenship," she said, quoted in a parliamentary statement, to which VerAngola had access.

ANGOLASAN2 was held at the National Archives of Angola in Luanda, under the motto "Angola 50 Years - Zero Plastic, let's take care of the Country".

"The main objective of the 2nd National Conference on the State of Sanitation in Angola is to enable multisectoral and multidisciplinary reflection on sanitation in Angola and to count on the active participation of various sectors to present strategic and practical steps to be developed in the short, medium and long term," said the Ministry of the Environment, in a statement to which VerAngola had access.

"In order to successfully develop sustainable community-based programs and actions that contribute to the effective reduction of poverty and ensure the improvement of the population's environmental and social indicators, with particular emphasis on greater access to drinking water and basic sanitation among other improvements, the event will carry out an open discussion on the state of sanitation and hygiene in Angola and how the sector can be rethought and coordinated together," the note also reads.
