In the competition, which will run until June 22, at the Kikuxi Villas Club Tennis Academy, Angola is placed in group A, also made up of the teams from Senegal and Cameroon.
After Wednesday's defeat, the national team will return to the field on June 20th to compete against Senegal. Angola also has a game against Cameroon scheduled for June 21st.
On an individual level, in the first match this Wednesday, Angolan Felix André lost 2-0 against Youssef Riane (Algeria).
According to a note from the government of the province of Luanda, to which VerAngola had access, the opening ceremony of the event took place this Wednesday, and was "marked by the presence of members of the Government and sports figures, with emphasis on the Minister of Youth and Sports, Rui Luís Falcão Pinto de Andrade, the director of the Provincial Office of Culture, Tourism, Youth and Sports, Teresa Tatiana Tomás de Morais Mbuta, and the president of the Angolan Tennis Federation, Platini Mendes".
As part of the opening of the event, the minister stated that the completion of one of the phases of the competition in the country is a "moment of pride" for national citizens, as well as considering that it is also an incentive for young national athletes.
"It's a cup of global reference and bringing it to Angola is a moment of pride for all of us", said Rui Falcão, who, quoted by Angop, added that the mission is to raise the flag of Angola by holding major international competitions.
It should be noted that, in addition to the teams from Angola, Algeria, Senegal and Cameroon, the teams from Kenya, Rwanda, Burundi and the Democratic Republic of Congo also participate in the competition - which is taking place for the first time in the country - covering a total of 32 tennis players from these countries.
In addition to Felix André, Nelson Almeida (captain), Chris Lukano, Daniel Domingos, André Fernando André and Emerson Pedro are also part of the national team, according to Angop.
The country's best classification in this event, so far, is seventh place, achieved in 2003, writes Angop, which adds that the last time the country participated in the event was in 2021, in the edition held in Congo.
It should be noted that the Davis Cup concerns the world tennis championship for men's national teams, and is included in the agenda of the International Tennis Federation.
