At liberty, activist 'Tanaice Neutro' promises to continue to criticize PR and Government

The activist Gilson da Silva Moreira 'Tanaice Neutro', was released last Friday, but promises to "continue to criticize the Government and the antics of the Angolan President” and to “fight” for a better country.

"In freedom they will have the same 'Tanaice Neutro', always criticizing the Angolan Government, the frauds of the President of the Republic (João Lourenço) and we will continue to fight so that we can give our country another direction", he said this Monday the activist in statements to Lusa.

'Tanaice Neutro', who joined the family on Friday night, after eight months in prison after being convicted in the first instance with a suspended sentence, considers that he only remained in prison on "superior orders".

According to the activist, on 18 May a group of judges approved his release and the decision was not implemented at the time because the magistrates, he said, "still depended on superior orders".

"But, thank God, on Friday at 7 pm a government team appeared there and I was released", he stressed.

Regarding his physical and emotional condition, the activist, who considers himself a "political prisoner", said he was "still troubled" and regretted not having received any medical assistance or support to undergo the "urgent" surgery he needed to treat a health problem.

'Tanaice' had been detained since January 2022 and was sentenced, on October 12, 2022, to a suspended prison sentence of 1 year and three months for committing the crime of outrage against the State, its symbols and organs.

The activist's trial sentence was read by the judge of the case, Daniel Ferreira, in the 1st section of the District Court of Luanda, which upheld the accusation by the Public Ministry (MP).

"It suspends (the court) the execution of the sentence imposed for a period of two years under the condition that the defendant withdraws to the entities injured in the process and by the same means within 15 days", said the judicial magistrate, on the occasion.

The Public Prosecutor's Office expressed dissatisfaction with the judge's decision and filed an appeal with the Court of Appeal with suspensive effects.

According to the court, it was proved that the activist 'Tanaice Neutro', 36 years old, committed the crime of outrage against the State, its symbols and organs for having called the Angolan President a "bandit and clown" and having assigned the same name to the staff of the national police, in the videos that the activist recorded and shared on social networks.

Today, the activist once again criticized the country's socio-economic condition, considering that, if at the time he was arrested "it was already bad", now the situation in Angola "is worse".

"Right now the country is worse, when I entered prison it was already bad, but now that I'm out it's worse, so what we can do is continue to fight. The MPLA and João Lourenço have to relinquish power", concluded the activist.

'Tanaice Neutro', who preferred not to go into further details, promised to speak later this week, at a press conference, about her detention, freedom and the current political, economic and social context in Angola.

The case led Amnesty International to mobilize a campaign for the activist's release under which petitions were delivered to the Angolan embassies in Portugal, Spain and South Africa, as well as to the Ministry of Justice and Human Rights in Luanda.
