Vera Daves: rising inflation is a result of withdrawal of subsidies

The Minister of Finance considered that the increase in inflation is the first consequence of the withdrawal of fuel subsidies, which almost doubled the price in one of the countries where they were cheaper.

"We are seeing the first signs of this impact", said Vera Daves de Sousa, in an interview with Bloomberg from Paris, where she is participating in the summit on a new global financing pact, promoted by the President of France and several world financial institutions.

Monetary policy and various measures to prevent "some speculation" on prices should put inflation back on a "downward path", added the person responsible for Finance, a country that saw inflation rise to 10.62 percent in May, after 15 months followed by going down.

Angola is trying to control spending and gain budget space to invest in sectors such as education, health and local businesses to improve people's lives, said the minister.

Asked if she fears more demonstrations against the withdrawal of subsidies, like the one that happened on Saturday, Vera Daves replied: "We are working hard on mitigation measures, we have increased the monthly amount of money for poor families, especially in rural areas, and We've committed more money to the cash drop program, and we're also establishing an employment fund."

In an interview with Bloomberg, the minister maintained the target of 3 percent economic growth for this year, and despite oil production falling, Vera Daves de Sousa said that she still had a positive outlook on the sector.

"We are still confident of a growth of three percent this year, but we will see in the coming months how oil production behaves", she said, stressing that the possibility of issuing international debt because of high rates continues to be ruled out.

"The interest rate that the market would ask us is too high for us to pay, we will only move forward when we realize that by doing so we will not put ourselves in a risky situation in terms of debt service", she concluded.
