President highlights "quite fruitful" visit by Egyptian counterpart and wants to strengthen cooperation

The President said that, "although short", the visit of his Egyptian counterpart, Abdel Fattah El-Sisi, was "quite fruitful" and that both countries intend to strengthen economic cooperation, especially in the fields of agriculture, pharmaceutical industry and others.

João Lourenço, who was speaking at the end of the official visit of the President of the Arab Republic of Egypt, said that El-Sisi had accepted the invitation to participate in the celebrations of Angola's 50 years of independence, in 2025.

Speaking alongside the Egyptian head of state, the President praised the presence of his counterpart, as part of the strengthening of bilateral relations.

"A gesture we are grateful for and which means saying that relations between Angola and Egypt are held in the highest regard, both by the Egyptian side and consequently also by the Angolan side", he said.

Angolan and Egyptian ministerial delegations met at the Presidential Palace, on which occasion they reviewed and outlined actions to strengthen cooperation in various areas.

According to João Lourenço, areas of mutual interest were identified, where the parties would like to see increased investment, namely agriculture, tourism, pharmaceutical industry, defence, information technologies and cybersecurity.

"These are some of the areas in which there is a reciprocal interest in strengthening our economic cooperation, we have also identified the water sector, the public works sector, for the construction of public infrastructure", he stressed.

The security situation in Africa, namely the conflicts in the Horn of the continent, in Mozambique, in the Democratic Republic of Congo, in the Sahel region and in Sudan, also guided the dialogue between Lourenço and El-Sisi.

"And we both defend the need to work, both the International Conference on the Great Lakes Region, of which Sudan is a member, and the Arab League, where Sudan and Egypt are members, in a coordinated way in order to see if we find the best solutions for the search for definitive peace in Sudan", highlighted João Lourenço.

The head of state also defended, in his speech, the need for all countries that are part of the Nile River corridor (Egypt, Sudan and Ethiopia) to share the resources that come from it, especially water.

"And this river cannot be the reason for conflict, but for unity between the three countries, and if there is a misunderstanding there is every need to talk and find a way for everyone to benefit from this good that belongs to all countries", he noted. .

Both statesmen also addressed the war between Russia and Ukraine, "the conflict that currently afflicts the world the most", and both defend that it is time to "put an end to this conflict that has caused a series of various crises".

"Like a humanitarian, security, energy and food crisis which, if you are not careful, could lead to worse dimensions in relation to the Second World War", considered the Angolan President.

João Lourenço also said that he was invited by Abdel Fattah El-Sisi to visit Egypt, realizing that he accepted the invitation and that the visit should take place "at the best opportunity".

Abdel Fattah El-Sisi was received at the Presidential Palace, in Luanda, with military honors and both delegations signed two memoranda of understanding, namely in the areas of security and order and internal and technical assistance for groundwater.
