New cancer treatment hospital will be built in the country

A cancer treatment hospital will be installed in the country. The announcement was made by Rafael Mariano Grossi, director general of the International Atomic Energy Agency, who indicated that the project could be ready between 2024 and 2025.

:

Speaking this Tuesday at the end of a meeting with the President of the Republic, João Lourenço, the official did not reveal the cost of the project, having only mentioned that the project should be ready within about three years, that is, between 2024. and 2025, writes to Angop.

Regarding the meeting with João Lourenço, the official classified him as "very productive" and informed that they discussed "possibilities of working together".

"We had a very constructive meeting with the President. We talked about the possibilities of working together, especially in the area of human health and training skills in oncology, radiotherapy, training skills and technology transfer in this area of medicine", informed the official, quoted by Angop.

This possible partnership could help the country to expand its capacity to respond to cancer treatment, translating into an opportunity for the Angolan Institute for Cancer Control (IACC) to strengthen its operational capacity, writes Jornal de Angola.

Capable of carrying out 300 consultations a day, the IACC has a workforce of 220 employees, among which about 30 are doctors. However, this number is too low to meet demand.

In addition to the shortage of manpower, the institution's list of difficulties includes the high cost of medicines against the disease and maintenance of the devices.

According to figures from the institution, cited by Jornal de Angola, the unit registers around 30 deaths per month. Deaths – which occur more frequently in cases of lung, breast, stomach, prostate, head, neck, colon and rectal cancer – are mostly due to patients entering the unit already in the terminal phase.

It is recalled that the President, João Lourenço, is in Lisbon, where he is present at the Conference on the Oceans. In addition to meeting with Rafael Mariano Grossi, the head of state also met, this Tuesday, with Jung Sung-Min, special envoy of the President of Korea Yoon Suk-yeol, having discussed matters related to the strengthening of bilateral relations, emphasizing the economic domain.
