The Football Museum will have its home in Benguela in a tribute to the province's sporting legends

Although there is still no date set for the start of the project, an initiative by the Provincial Football Association (APF) of Benguela will invest around 30 million kwanzas to make the province the headquarters of a museum dedicated to football, the first in Angola in the post-independence period.

Júlio Brito, president of the local APF, told Angop that this project is an innovation of the current mandate – which runs until 2023 – and is a way to preserve the history and memory of Angolan football legends, with special emphasis on the players from Angola province.

The museum will be built inside the National Stadium of Ombaka, in an area already ceded to the promoters.

The official highlighted that Benguela could be the first of the provinces to have a museum dedicated to sport that would attract a new stream of tourists. However, no time frame for its construction has advanced.

This new space will collect images, balls, trophies, medals, cups and equipment used by old and new football legends. Miau, Pedro Garcia, Maluka, Sayombo, Sarmento and Akwá are some of the 'stars' of the province who will see their name immortalized in the museum.

"Everyone remembers the Angola-Cuba game at União da Catumbela stadium. This is part of history," added Júlio Brito.

As it was not possible to organize tournaments to collect funds for the project, taking into account the covid-19 pandemic, the official admitted the investment of APF's own funds and the need for business support.

After Luanda, Benguela is the most represented province in Girabola, with three teams in the competition (Wiliete, Académica do Lobito and Sporting de Benguela). Despite no longer playing in the top flight, the province's historic team is the 1º de Maio de Benguela.
