Nurses' Order warns that malaria is killing more than covid-19

The president of the Ordem dos Enfermeiros was concerned about the high number of cases of malaria registered in the country in recent months, warning that this disease kills more than covid-19.

"The Order of Nurses of Angola is very concerned about the malaria situation, we have been warning the executive not to get distracted looking only at covid-19, because after all, today, we can understand that malaria is killing more than covid-19," said Pascoal Luvualo, speaking to Rádio Nacional de Angola.

According to Pascoal Luvualo, the warning was given not to reach a point of total lack of control in the situation.

"We have few professionals and, based on the number of cases, we are hearing from Benguela province, which, for me, is just the tip of the iceberg, where a health unit with a capacity of 80 beds is registering 200 inpatients for two nursing professionals is extremely serious", he considered.

Pascoal Luvual stressed the need for the Executive to think "immediately about this situation", with a view to solving the problem, which has to do with medicines and human resources.

"Because if, with 50 to 60 patients for each nursing professional, that's a lot, what can we say about 100 to 150 for each nursing professional", he asked.

Health authorities in the province of Benguela are dealing with an outbreak of malaria and dengue, with a record of 2000 cases a day, of which, in every 400 diagnosed, one person dies, mostly children from zero to 14 years old.

The current situation has led to overcrowding of health facilities, with more than two patients sharing the same bed, in some cases reaching three people, in addition to those accommodated in the corridors for their care.

Malaria is an endemic disease in Angola, being the main cause of death in the country, as well as hospitalizations and absence from school and work.
