Covid-19: Africa with 361 more deaths and 12,347 infected in the last 24 hours

Africa has recorded an additional 361 deaths associated with covid-19 in the past 24 hours, bringing the total number of deaths since the start of the pandemic to 132,786, and 12,347 newly infected, according to the latest official data.

According to the African Union Centers for Disease Control and Prevention (Africa CDC), the total number of cases on the continent is 4,938,325 and the number recovered is 4,457,645, plus 11,773 in the last 24 hours.

Southern Africa remains the most affected region, with 2,130,412 cases and 65,585 deaths associated with covid-19. This region is the country most affected by the pandemic on the continent, South Africa, which accounts for 1,699,849 cases and 57,063 deaths.

North Africa is the second most affected region on the continent, with 1,486,597 infected with the SARS-CoV-2 virus and 44,927 deaths associated with the infection.

East Africa has 664,588 infections and 13,115 deaths, and the West Africa region has 475,806 infections and 6306 deaths.

The Central African region registers the fewest cases of infection and deaths, 180,922 and 2853 respectively.

Egypt, which is the second African country with more fatalities after South Africa, registers 15,399 deaths and 268,754 infected, followed by Tunisia, with 13,027 deaths and 356,750 cases, and Morocco, which accounts for the second largest number of infections across the continent, 521,530 cases, but fewer deaths than the two previous countries, 9181 deaths associated with the disease.

Among the countries most affected are Ethiopia, with 4213 deaths and 273,024 infections, and Algeria, with 3658 deaths and 131,283 infected.

In relation to Portuguese-speaking countries, Mozambique accounts for 838 deaths and 71,145 cases, followed by Angola (800 deaths and 35,854 cases of infection), Cape Verde (267 deaths and 31,147 cases), Equatorial Guinea (118 deaths and 8626 cases) , Guinea-Bissau (68 dead and 3784 cases) and São Tomé and Príncipe (37 dead and 2344 cases).
