Country prepares to extinguish academic regions and create three new universities

The country is preparing to do away with academic regions and create three new universities, as announced on Thursday by the Minister of Higher Education, Science, Technology and Innovation, Maria Rosário Sambo. These changes come under the Higher Education Reform Programme.

:

The governor, who was speaking at the end of a meeting of the Council of Ministers' Commission for Social Policy, said that the academic regions will cease to exist and that the universities in the provinces where the academic regions are located will fill that void. This reform, she said, will contribute to the development of higher education institutions as well as the growth of neighbouring regions.

According to the minister, the Government has decided to end the academic regions because it considers that they do not add any value to the education sector. In addition, the government revealed that these regions create management problems since they are far from their headquarters.

Cited by Angop, the holder of the Higher Education portfolio revealed that the University of Namibe will result from the merger of the Academy of Fisheries and Marine Sciences with the Higher Polytechnic and Pedagogical Schools of Mandume University.

The University of Luanda will be joined by the Higher Institutes of Arts, Social Service, Information and Communication Technology and Logistics Management and Transport, he said.

Still about the capital, Maria Rosário Sambo revealed that the Higher Institute of Physical Education and Sports will belong to the Agostinho Neto University (UAN). The Higher Institute of Science and Information, which has only one course, will cease to exist and the Faculty of Social Sciences - which also belongs to UAN - will teach that course.

As for the University Rainha Ginga, in Malanje, it will be created with the association between the Higher Polytechnic School, the University of Medicine - located in Dundo, Lunda Norte - and the Higher Polytechnic and Agro-Food Technology Institutes, indicated.

Maria Rosário Sambo also said that, in the scope of the Higher Education Reformulation Plan, polytechnic institutions should be created with the aim of guaranteeing the training of professionals interested in the socio-economic development of the regions where they are inserted.

To put this reform plan into practice, the holder of the Higher Education portfolio revealed that she will count on the help of institutions, provincial governments and the Ministry of Finance.

Finally, the minister also admitted the possibility that the universities will hire more professionals with this reform.
