Classes, both primary and lower secondary, are scheduled to return on 27 July. However, this Monday, the governors of the 18 provinces of the country were reticent and advised postponing the resumption of classes.

The concerns were exposed during a video-conference led by the Minister of State for Social Affairs, Carolina Cerqueira, and also attended by the Secretary of State for Social Communication, Nuno Carnaval, and the Minister of Education, Luísa Grilo.

According to Carolina Cerqueira, quoted by Jornal de Angola, the start of the classes is a "very big concern" for not being assured the necessary biosecurity measures to prevent covid-19.

The minister also said that this concern becomes greater in primary education, since raising awareness among children about the risk of the disease is a difficult task.

In addition, the lack of water, the lack of people to care for children in schools and the degradation of school infrastructure were other reasons why governors advised postponement.

These issues will be discussed with the Ministry of Education and Health in order to find a solution that guarantees the protection of children, said the minister, stressing that regardless of the presence of these problems, the school year will not be cancelled.

Classes in the country were suspended at the end of March due to covid-19.
