Football returns to August 15th "but subject to the evolution of the pandemic"

The Angolan Football Federation (FAF) announced that the start of the 2020/2021 sports season is scheduled for August 15th, despite "subject to the evolution of covid-19 in the country and guidelines from health authorities".

In an official statement sent to Lusa, the FAF says that the indicative date is in line with the presidential decree on the situation of public calamity that has been in force in the country since May 26, as a measure to contain the spread of the pandemic.

The FAF, however, does not specify the date of the draw for the 43rd edition of the national football championship Girabola 2020/21, which according to the press is scheduled for 15 July.

According to the official communiqué nº17 / SG / 20, of June 4, 2020, the clubs São Salvador do Zaire and Baixa de Cassange de Malanje are qualified to qualify for the 16th team to join the competition in the 2020/21 season.

One of these clubs will replace the 1º de Maio de Benguela, disqualified before the event is canceled.

The clubs unanimously decided, on 30 April, to cancel the Girabola, interrupted in March due to the covid-19 pandemic, mainly to "safeguard the health and the high expenses with the athletes whose contracts expired in May".

The decision of the clubs active in Girabola was presented during a meeting with the FAF, which analyzed the competition's interregnum after the 25th round was played.

The football championship, then led by Petro de Luanda, with 54 points, was suspended in March following the decree on the state of emergency.

For the 2020/21 season, 15 teams are already confirmed in the race.

Among the various administrative procedures for the next 2020/2021 sports season and club licensing rules, the FAF requires a football field / stadium insurance policy, report and accounts approved by an authorized audit, among other aspects.

Clubs must also provide financial proof with a bank guarantee of at least 100,000,000 kwanzas before the start of the season.

Petro de Luanda and 1º de Agosto were nominated to represent Angola in the League of African Champion Clubs of Football, while Sagrada Esperança and Bravos do Maquis will be in the Confederation Cup.
