In the message sent to Evariste Ndayishimiye, João Lourenço, who was invited to take office but was unable to participate because of "the circumstances resulting from the covid-19 pandemic", is convinced that the new leadership will be "able to promote the realization of the great interests of Burundi" as well as progress and stability.

"It is widely expected that during your mandate the Republic of Angola and the Republic of Burundi will intensify cooperation actions of mutual interest that contribute to the well-being and prosperity of Angola and Burundi," the Angolan Head of State also said.

The president of Burundi, who won the presidential elections held on 20 May, anticipated the formality scheduled for August, after the sudden death of his predecessor on 9 May.

The death of Pierre Nkurunziza left open the possibility of his ally and spokesman for the National Assembly, Pascal Nyabenda, being appointed interim President, in accordance with the Constitution.

The Constitutional Court of Burundi ruled this week that President-elect Evariste Ndayishimiye should take office immediately, putting an end to the uncertainty created by the death of the former head of state.

Pierre Nkurunziza died on Monday at the age of 55 following a "cardiac arrest", the Burundian government announced in a statement.

However, some observers report that the head of state is believed to have died from problems associated with covid-19.
