Heads of State and Government from several countries, including the African, Caribbean and Pacific (ACP) Group of States, and leaders of international organisations meet on Wednesday at a virtual summit to discuss the post-covid-19 future. According to the organisation of ACP States, whose Secretary-General is the former Angolan Foreign Minister, Georges Chikoti, the virtual summit "aims to assess the current global situation of covid-19 and, in particular, the effects and consequences for the member states of the ACP", says a communiqué released on the organisation's website.

The extraordinary summit "Overcoming the covid-19 pandemic: building resilience through global solidarity" will be divided into a dialogue between ACP heads of state and strategic development partners.

"Held simultaneously in four different time zones where the organisation of ACP states operates, the summit will focus on three pillars: building resilience, sustaining economies and recovery for a strong recovery, and stimulating global solidarity and deepening partnerships," says the organisation, which adds that a joint communiqué supported by ACP countries is planned at the end.

The summit is scheduled to begin at noon in Brussels and will be opened by the President of the Republic of Kenya and the organisation, Uhuru Kenyatta.

The panel "Dialogue of Heads of State and Government on the challenges faced by ACP States during the covid-19 pandemic" will be opened by an intervention of the Director General of the World Health Organisation (WHO), Tedros Adhanom Ghebreyesus, followed by the participation of Heads of State from several countries, including the South African President, Cyril Ramaphosa, as President of the African Union, and the President, João Lourenço.

The discussion on key actions for global solidarity will include the participation of the President of Guinea-Bissau, Umaro Sissoco Embaló.

The first part of the summit will close after speeches by Georges Chikoti and Uhuru Kenyatta, who will open the second part, dedicated to consultation with strategic partners for development.

Among the participants will be UN Secretary-General António Guterres, European Council President Charles Michel and European Commission President Ursula Von der Leyen, as well as French President Emmanuel Macron and Swiss President Simonetta Sommaruga.

The summit will also be attended by the German Chancellor (Angela Merkel), and the Prime Ministers of Japan (Shinzo Abe), Norway (Erna Solberg), India (Narendra Modi), Canada (Justin Trudeau), Australia (Scott Morrison) and the United Kingdom (Boris Johnson).

The contest will be concluded after a final intervention by Kenyatta.

"The covid-19 pandemic calls for global action and solidarity. Together we will be able to fight this virus and its terrible socio-economic consequences and ensure the well-being of our citizens. Now is the time to work on innovative solutions that will also ensure global preparedness for the future," said Georges Chikoti in a statement on the ACP states' website, a group of 79 countries from the three regions.

This organisation includes the Portuguese-speaking African countries (PALOP) - Angola, Cape Verde, Guinea-Bissau, Equatorial Guinea, Mozambique and São Tomé and Príncipe.

On a global level, according to an assessment by the AFP news agency, the covid-19 pandemic has already caused more than 375,000 deaths and infected more than 6.2 million people in 196 countries and territories.

More than 2.6 million patients have been considered cured.
