Covid-19: Africa's death toll rises to 7395 in over 275,000 cases

The death toll from covid-19 in Africa has risen to 7,395, up 198 in the past 24 hours, in about 275,000 cases, according to the most recent data on the continent's pandemic.

According to the African Union's Center for Disease Control and Prevention (Africa CDC), the number of infected people went from 267,519 to 275,327, plus 7808.

The number of recovered is 125,316, plus 2655.

Southern Africa is the one with the highest number of cases, (87,897) - and 1777 dead - the vast majority concentrated in South Africa, the country with the most cases across the continent (83,890) and where there are 1737 fatalities.

North Africa continues to lead in total deaths, passing the three thousand (3115), accounting for 74,567 infections.

West Africa records 1049 deaths out of 57,324 infected, East Africa has 883 fatalities and 29,336 cases, while in Central Africa there are 571 deaths out of 26,203 infections.

Egypt is the country with the most deaths (1938) and has passed 50,000 infections (50,437), followed by South Africa and then Algeria, with 811 fatalities and 11,385 infected.

Among the five most affected countries is Nigeria, with 475 dead and 18,480 infected, and Ghana, with 66 deaths from 12,929 infections.

As for the Portuguese-speaking African countries, Guinea-Bissau is the one with the most infections and deaths, with 1492 cases, registering 15 fatalities.

Cape Verde has 782 infections and seven deaths and São Tomé and Príncipe accounts for 683 cases and 12 deaths.

Mozambique counts 662 infected patients and four dead and Angola has 166 confirmed cases of covid-19 and eight dead.

Equatorial Guinea, which is part of the Community of Portuguese Speaking Countries (CPLP), records 1664 cases and 32 deaths, according to the last report by the Government of that country.

The covid-19 pandemic has already claimed more than 450,000 deaths and infected more than 8.4 million people in 196 countries and territories, according to a report by the French agency AFP.
