Covid-19: numbers continue to rise. 11 more new infections and one dead

Angola has registered 11 new infections with the new coronavirus and one death, the eighth death, out of a total now of 166 positive cases, the Minister of Health said this Thursday.

Silvia Lutucuta said the death was of a 61-year-old citizen, transferred from the province of Kwanza Norte, with chronic aggravated respiratory syndrome and who was already suffering from severe infectious lung disease and diabetes.

According to the minister, the patient arrived at the emergency bank of the Military Hospital already in a critical condition, "and died in a short time.

"Besides this, we have two cases in Kwanza Norte, which broke through the health fence and from the point of view of epidemiological link with the health fence of Hoji-Ya-Henda," said the minister, noting that 39 contacts have already been identified and isolated.

Regarding the infected, aged between one month and 61 years, two female and nine male, five are related to the health fence of the Multiperfil Clinic, various professionals (maintenance technicians, drivers, pharmacist and doctor).

The Health Officer recalled that the disease has already reached the province of Kwanza Norte, so "it is one step away from reaching any other place if citizens do not comply with individual and collective prevention measures".

"We still have suspicious cases under investigation (460), we have contacts under surveillance (1244), people in institutional quarantine (499) and we continue to call for individual protection measures, frequent hand washing or the use of alcohol gel and mascara in public places and distance between people", she said.

Silvia Lutucuta said health authorities are doing everything they can to control the situation, which doesn't mean new cases won't arise.

"By our numbers we are not in the worst-case scenario, but if we do not comply with the measures that are very well outlined in our competent dispatch of the state of calamity we may be one step away from community movement, as we may also have many cases," she stressed.

Of the 166 positive cases, 64 were considered recovered.

The covid-19 pandemic has already claimed more than 449,000 lives and infected more than 8.3 million people in 196 African countries and territories, according to a report by the French agency AFP.

The disease is transmitted by a new coronavirus detected at the end of December 2019 in Wuhan, a city in central China.

After Europe succeeded China as the centre of the pandemic in February, the American continent has become the country with the most confirmed cases, although with the fewest deaths.
