Number of deaths in Africa rises to 6464 in more than 242,000 cases of covid-19

The number of deaths per covid-19 in Africa has risen to 6464, up 220 in the last 24 hours, in about 242,000 cases, according to the latest data on the pandemic on the continent.

According to the Centers for Disease Control and Prevention of the African Union (Africa CDC), the number of infected rose from 232,815 to 242,105, plus 9290 in the last 24 hours.

The number recovered is 109,977, plus 3518.

Southern Africa has the highest number of cases (73,635) - and 1515 dead - the vast majority being concentrated in South Africa, the country with the most cases in the entire continent, and which passed this Monday to 70,000 infections (70,038) and where there are 1480 fatalities.

North Africa continues to lead in total deaths: 2698, accounting for 67,607 infections.

West Africa registers 952 deaths and passed this Monday the 50 thousand cases (51.267), East Africa has 825 fatalities and 26.661 cases, while in Central Africa there are 474 deaths in 22.935 infections.

Egypt is the country with the most deaths (1575) in 44,598 infections, followed by South Africa and then Algeria, with 767 deaths and 10,919 infected.

Among the five most affected countries is also Nigeria, with 420 deaths and 16,085 infected, and Ghana, with 54 deaths from 11,964 infections.

Among the Portuguese-speaking African countries, Guinea-Bissau has the highest number of infections and deaths, with 1460 cases, with 15 deaths.

Cape Verde has 750 infections and six deaths and Sao Tome and Principe has 659 cases and 12 deaths.

Mozambique has 583 infected patients and two deaths and Angola has 140 confirmed cases of covid-19 and six deaths.

Equatorial Guinea, which is part of the Community of Portuguese Speaking Countries (CPLP), has 1664 cases and 32 deaths, according to the latest report by the government of that country.

The first case of covid-19 in Africa emerged in Egypt on 14 February, and Nigeria was the first country in sub-Saharan Africa to register cases of infection on 28 February.

The covid-19 pandemic has already claimed over 431,000 lives and infected over 7.8 million people in 196 countries and territories, according to a report by the French agency AFP.

The disease is transmitted by a new coronavirus detected at the end of December in Wuhan, a city in central China.
