The data, released this week by the National Statistics Institute (INE) and cited by Expansão, reveal that young people are the most affected by this problem. Of the total number of unemployed, 2.8 million are young people between the ages of 15 and 24.
Last year there were 4.7 million unemployed in the country, out of a total of 14.8 million economically active people. This year, around 9 million Angolans (60.7 per cent) are economically active and 10.8 per cent are inactive.
According to INE, the unemployment rate for people over 15 years old in the first quarter of 2019 stood at 31.7 percent. However, with the rise in unemployment this year, the rate rose to 32 per cent.
The data also indicate that between January and March 2020 there were no more than 108,299 jobs.
These figures do not include the statistics for the two months in which the country was in a state of emergency, a time when several companies were unable to survive economically, estimating that the data for the second quarter of 2020 is even worse.
