Two brothers die of arson caused by hunters in the province of Uíje

Two brothers, six and 14, died as a result of arson by poachers in the municipality of Quimbele, Uíje province, the local press reported Monday.

:

According to a relative of the minors, quoted by Angop, the incident occurred on Sunday, in the village of Quimussoco, on the outskirts of the municipal headquarters, when the victims were in the woods hunting rats.

Orlando Manuel, the victims' uncle, said his nephews were rescued alive to the municipal hospital, but they could not resist intoxication.

The police are already conducting investigations to arrest the group of hunters, who set fire to the grass to facilitate their activity, and hold them criminally responsible, said a police source quoted in the news.

The burning in the country, for the practice of agriculture and hunting, is a concern for the authorities, who, in order to circumvent the framework, have promoted awareness campaigns about the danger of this action.

In 2019, the authorities acknowledged that the loss of native forests in Angola, due to uncontrolled fires of various origins, mainly hunting, due to a lack of environmental awareness and weaknesses in the surveillance system, is a fact.

Data released in October last year by the National Civil Protection and Fire Brigade reported that from May to September that year there were more than 970,000 forest fires, an increase of more than 360,000 cases, compared to the same period in 2018, which had caused three deaths.
