According to a police note, the incident occurred on the banks of the Pôro River, 20 kilometres from the municipal headquarters of Caungula, when the 29-year-old suspect was engaged in poaching.
"When he realised he was standing in front of a deer, the young man allegedly shot and caused the immediate death of the elderly woman, who would then realise that it was a person and not a deer," the police said.
The man is already in custody and will be presented to the public prosecutor.
