Unemployment rate fell to 29.4 percent in first quarter

The unemployment rate reached 29.4 percent in the first quarter of this year, down three percentage points year-on-year, revealed the National Institute of Statistics.

According to data consulted by Lusa in the Employment Survey Quick Fact Sheet, in the first quarter, the fall in the unemployment rate was more significant among the younger population, between 15 and 24 years old, falling from 63.5 percent to 54.3 percent.

The majority of jobs created were in the informal sector, which absorbs almost 81 percent of the employed population estimated at 10,353,727, which represents 964,417 more people than in the same quarter of the previous year, with 89.4 percent of women in informal employment.

In the universe of the working-age population (people aged 15 or over), 12.8 million people declared that they worked during this period, in employment, self-employment or in a family business, while 5.3 million said they had no paid work.

The employment rate was estimated at 63.2 percent, with 37.9 percent in the 15-24 age group.

In the first quarter of 2025, the employed population recorded a year-on-year increase of 8.9 percent and more than half (50.7 percent) have their main job in agriculture, livestock production, hunting, forestry and fishing, followed by wholesale and retail trade with 20.1 percent.
