MPLA highlights “setback for Portuguese democracy” after legislative elections in the country

The MPLA Secretary for State Reform, Public Administration and Local Authorities lamented this Monday the defeat of the Socialist Party (PS) and considered the results of this Sunday's legislative elections “a setback for Portuguese democracy”.

:

Mário Pinto de Andrade, who was speaking to the press on the sidelines of the opening ceremony of the constituent congress of PRA-JA Servir Angola, considered the Portuguese elections “competitive and fierce” and stressed that it was up to the sovereign Portuguese people to decide.

“The Portuguese decided that they did not want a government with an absolute majority. They decided for a government with a larger majority, a new term that is in the political lexicon in Portugal,” he noted, stating that “it is a shame” that the PS, “the founding party of democracy,” has fallen.

In the year of the 50th anniversary of the celebration of democracy in Portugal, “the right wing is the one that won, to the detriment of other democratic forces”, lamented the politician, representative of the Popular Movement for the Liberation of Angola (MPLA), at the opening ceremony of the congress that will elect this Monday the first president of PRA-JA Servir Angola.

“It is a huge setback for Portuguese democracy, but the people are sovereign, it is the people who decide”, highlighted Mário Pinto de Andrade.

In turn, the vice-president of the National Union for the Total Independence of Angola (UNITA), Simão Dembo, said that the Portuguese elections were followed with particular interest, noting that there was “an exponential growth of Chega” and, “practically, the succumbing of the PS”.

“The Portuguese people who made the choice chose the best for themselves. The AD will continue to govern the country and we wish the Portuguese people the best they want for their country,” he said.

The AD - PSD/CDS Coalition won Sunday's legislative elections in Portugal, with 89 deputies, to which are added the three elected by the AD coalition with the PPM in the Azores, while PS and Chega tied in the number of elected to parliament, 58.

The Liberal Initiative remains the fourth political force, with one more deputy (9) than in 2024, and fifth place goes to Livre, which went from four to six elected representatives.

The CDU lost one elected representative and was left with three parliamentarians, while the Left Bloc is reduced to one representative. PAN also maintained a deputy.

The JPP, from Madeira, managed to elect a deputy.

These results do not yet include voters residing abroad, whose participation and choices will be known on May 28.
