Angola spent 662 million dollars on fuel imports in the first quarter

Angola spent 662 million dollars on fuel imports in the first quarter of 2025, having imported 73 percent, less than in the last quarter of 2024, according to official data.

Data on the petroleum derivatives sector for the first three months of the year were presented this Thursday in Luanda by the Director General of the Petroleum Derivatives Regulatory Institute (IRDP), Luís Fernandes.

During this period, the country acquired 1,147,248 metric tons (MT) for sale, of which approximately 55.8 percent corresponded to gasoline, 33.5 percent to diesel, 5.4 percent to fuel, 3.7 percent to Jet A1, 1.3 percent to illuminating oil and the remaining 0.3 percent to asphalt.

In terms of origins, the Luanda Refinery produced 26 percent of the products in question, 1 percent was produced by the Cabinda Gulf Oil Company (CABGOC) and 73 percent were imported, at a cost of 662 million dollars.

According to the IRDP director-general, in terms of storage capacity, the country currently has internal storage of 675,968 cubic metres.

There are at least 1,202 liquid fuel filling stations in Angola, but only 920 are in operation, mostly belonging to the state oil company Sonangol.

The volume of global fuel sales in the months of January, February and March last year was 1,129,849 metric tonnes, representing a decrease of 7 percent compared to the previous quarter, said Luís Fernandes.

In relation to gaseous fuels, in the period in question, the national market absorbed 112,957 metric tonnes of gas, the majority (69.2 percent) coming from the Angola LNG factory.
