The Luachimo Hydroelectric Plant, located in Lunda Norte, will be inaugurated on Friday by João Baptista Borges, Minister of Energy and Water, who, during his workday in the east of the country, will also witness the ceremony of consignment and laying of the stone for the construction project of the 86 kilometer line of the Dundo and Nzagi Corridor.

The project – built in the 1950s, with the aim of supplying electricity to Dundo and neighboring mining areas – saw its capacity grow from eight megawatts (MW) to 34 MW, after the rehabilitation and expansion works were completed. Thus, at the moment, the project has a new hydraulic and central circuit, whose installed capacity is 34 MW, and is equipped with four generating groups of around eight MW each, writes Jornal de Angola.

Therefore, it should be noted that the project served to rehabilitate the infrastructure that already existed, as well as increase the capacity to produce electrical energy in order to meet the needs of the province.

According to a statement, cited by Jornal de Angola, the project "had an execution period of 87 months, having created 1000 direct jobs, covering a population of around 10,000 families".

It should be noted that at the beginning of the month, the Secretary of State for Energy, Arlindo Carlos, visited the Luachimo Hydroelectric Plant.

According to a statement from the Ministry of Energy and Water, to which VerAngola had access, the Secretary of State "verified the operational levels of the electrical energy produced by the Luachimo Hydroelectric Power Plant, which is already interconnected to the public grid.

"The Luachimo Hydroelectric Power Station, with its expansion works and increase in power from 8.4 to 34 megawatts, already completed, has four machines (turbines) synchronized to the Dundo city network", reads the note, which adds that the current production capacity of the plant, "whose rehabilitation and power increase works began in 2017, is sufficient to serve the city of Dundo and other locations in the municipality of Cambulo, such as Fucauma, Cassanguidi, Luxilo and Nzagi".

In addition to the inauguration, João Baptista Borges' agenda – as part of a working day in the east of the country – also includes witnessing the consignment ceremony and laying of the stone for the construction project of the 86 kilometer line of the Dundo Nzagi Corridor, whose emergence of the initiative fits within the goals established by the government which aims to ensure citizens' access to electricity, as well as the improvement of social conditions and the development of the agricultural, livestock and mining sector.

Therefore, in the aforementioned locations, the MV distribution networks, at 30 kilovolts (Kv) and the BT distribution network will be implemented. In addition, transformation stations will also be installed, along with the implementation of approximately 1500 new household connections and 500 public lighting points, writes Jornal de Angola.
