Minister of Education says school manuals will have “harmonization of grammatical terminology”

The Minister of Education announced this Thursday that the textbooks for the next academic year, which begins in September, will feature “harmonization of grammatical terminology” and Portuguese language teachers are already being trained.

According to Luísa Grilo, who was speaking at the solemn ceremony commemorating the World Portuguese Language Day, in Luanda, the revision of school textbooks, for students and teachers, constitutes a "challenge for teachers" who are already being trained.

The official added that the implementation of the first National Reading Plan is underway and that it also includes authors from the Community of Portuguese Speaking Countries (CPLP).

In this regard, she underlined, "given the mobility of the citizens of the Member States, it would not be too much if the authors indispensable to the common knowledge of the students of our community were defined".

"As this objective would allow for the knowledge of the other with a view to strengthening the ties between fraternal peoples, in the meantime our concern in the context of the teaching and learning process also extends to qualitative results", stated Luísa Grilo.

Pilot national exams in the subjects of mathematics and Portuguese language will be carried out in the next school year in Angola, aiming to assess the "state of the situation" of learning in order to find "a solution to the needs that have come to be identified".

The event alluding to the World Day of the Portuguese Language took place at the headquarters of the Ministry of Foreign Affairs, downtown Luanda, and was chaired by the holder of the ministerial portfolio Téte António.

For Luísa Grilo, globalization requires "a higher level of organization" in order to "contextualize the various linguistic phenomena arising from the communication process".

"And before these phenomena are taught, it is important that case records are studied in detail", she stressed.

The Portuguese language "will continue its journey as a living language, not only because of the number of speakers, but also because of the number and quality of writers that the community has", she said.

The ceremony, which also marks the opening of the "Portuguese Language Week", in Luanda, was attended by the CPLP executive secretary, Zacarias da Costa, the CPLP ministers of Culture and Tourism, diplomats and academics.

"We express our desire to maintain the 'Portuguese Language Week' as a moment of exchange between experts from our community, in order to capitalize on synergies to continue to elevate our common intangible asset, which is the Portuguese language" , concluded Luísa Grilo.
