Angola highlights “consolidation of political and diplomatic consultation” to boost tourism in the CPLP

The Minister of Culture, Tourism and Environment considered this Tuesday the 11th meeting of Ministers of Tourism of the Community of Portuguese-Speaking Countries (CPLP) an opportunity to “consolidate political and diplomatic consultation to strengthen the sector”.

:

Filipe Zau, who was speaking at the opening of the meeting, in Luanda, said that the meeting aims at "effective cooperation" between Member States for "strengthening the economic and business side after a difficult period of crisis, as a result of the harmful effects of the Covid-19".

"This meeting constitutes a resource for strengthening our relations of friendship and affection, as well as for the exercise of our multilateral cooperation, as well as bilateral, for innovation in the context of environmental sustainability", he said.

Angola leads the rotating presidency of the CPLP and at this meeting will assume the presidency of the meeting of Tourism ministers of the organization, until now in charge of Cape Verde.

According to Filipe Zau, tourism "is, demonstrably, a sector that generates huge expectations for the strengthening of the community's economies, since it is through national and foreign investment that it will become possible to raise the necessary revenue for the challenges".

The strengthening of political coordination and the sharing of information on the contribution of tourism to the sustainable socio-economic recovery of the CPLP, the consolidation of political and diplomatic consultation on potential coordination activities of the CPLP aimed at strengthening the tourism sector in the Member States are among the motives of the encounter.

The meeting should also resume the previous deliberations of the meetings of Ministers of Tourism in the community, assess the degree of execution of the Action Plan of the previous mandate and identify priorities for the period 2022-2024.

"We are therefore confident that, within our community, tourism will be able to help us create jobs, improve the quality of life of communities and significantly contribute to the enhancement and validation of the environmental and cultural heritage of the member states of the CPLP", he concluded.

The executive secretary of the CPLP, Zacarias da Costa, recalled, at the opening of the meeting, that the pandemic "had a devastating impact on the economy and employment, with the tourism industry being severely hit by the measures to contain and mitigate the spread of the virus".

In the opinion of this official, the recognition of the economic importance of tourism and the need for its sustained and resilient recovery in the post-covid period, "require from the CPLP an integrated transversal look, which contributes to the formulation of tourism policies that induce a development that intends to be sustainable".

The cooperation strategy in the tourism sector, he stressed, "is in line with other CPLP development sectors, also structured in sectoral and relevant strategies for the development of the tourism sector".

Zacarias da Costa also renewed the commitment of the CPLP executive secretariat to "resume dialogue" with the World Tourism Organization, with a view to "renegotiating the Memorandum of Understanding" between the two organisations.

"So we can look for synergies and partnerships that contribute to the realization of the potential that tourism represents for our member states", he concluded.

In addition to Angola, the ministers of Tourism from Cape Verde, Guinea-Bissau, Equatorial Guinea, Mozambique, Portugal and São Tomé and Príncipe will attend this meeting in person, while those from Brazil and Timor-Leste will participate by videoconference.

"The contribution of tourism to the sustainable socio-economic recovery of the CPLP in the post-covid period. Challenges and opportunities" is the motto of this 11th meeting of Ministers of Tourism of the CPLP.
