The tricolors thus add their 15th national title, being only surpassed by the 1st of August, which has 19 champion trophies. The title fight this season was a 'copy' of the previous edition, with Petro's 3-0 victory over Interclube in the playoffs.
As for this Tuesday's game, at half-time Petro already extended the lead to 12 points (56-44), in what was the most balanced match of all the final games. However, the fourth period sealed the victory for Petro, who scored 27 points in the final 10 minutes, allowing the 'policemen' to score just 12 points.
In the spotlight was Carlos Morais: the winger added 25 points and five assists throughout the match. Glofate Buiamba stood out for Interclube, who despite the defeat was the best scorer of the match, with 31 points. He further completed the performance with 13 rebounds and three assists, having won the championship 'Fair Play Athlete' trophy.
The most awaited title of the season was handed over to Petro's base winger, Gerson Gonçalves 'Lukeny', elected the Most Valuable Player (MVP) of the national championship. At the age of 26, this was the 1.93-meter athlete's first distinction as MVP, after starting his career at the senior level in 2016. The base winger has also been one of the main options of the national basketball team.
José Neto, Petro's coach, said that winning this championship is the result of hard work by the players and the club's management. For the Brazilian, the season was marked by a high level of competition, despite the fact that his team ended undefeated in the 30 matches played.
Raúl Duarte, in charge of Interclube, was satisfied with his second consecutive presence in the playoffs of the national championship. However, he considered that the second position is somewhat unfair to the delivery shown by his players, who he said he is proud of for their dedication throughout the games.
