Teachers suspend second and third stages of national strike

The National Union of Teachers and Non-University Education Workers (SINPETU) has decided to "temporarily suspend" the second phase of the national strike, scheduled to begin this Monday, due to the shortening of the school year, expressing "solidarity with the authorities."

According to the secretary general of SINPTENU, Victor Gimbi, the decision to suspend the second phase of the strike, scheduled between 24 and 27 May, was deliberated last May 19, mainly because of the shortening of the school year 2020/21 motivated by covid-19.

The third phase of the strike, planned between June 14 and July 2, was also suspended for "further moments of claiming in a looser way."

"We deliberated on May 19 to suspend the strike due to the shortening of the school year, which, we all know, was quite turbulent for its conclusion, and we, looking at the epidemiological situation, we thought it was right to deliberate the suspension of the second and third phases," Victor Gimbi told Lusa on Monday.

The first phase of the strike took place between April 22nd and 27th.

Better working conditions, salary increase, promotions, adjustment of categories, implementation of transport for teachers or the respective subsidy and the creation of more efficient and constant means for the protection of education agents against covid-19 are some of the demands of the teachers.

The significant increase of new cases of covid-19 led the authorities to anticipate to June 30 the end of the school year, one month earlier than planned, according to a decree from the Ministry of Education.

Quarterly exams in transition classes began this Monday and run until June 3, and for exam classes, they will be from June 7 to June 18.

"We sympathize with the authorities for the effort they have been making to control and combat covid-19 and this is the fundamental reason that led us to suspend the second and third phases of the strike for a later occasion when the situation is calmer," stressed the secretary general of SINPTENU.

Angola, which is in its 13th extension of the public calamity situation, has 32.441 positive cases, 26.778 recovered, 4938 active and 725 deaths.
