The Secretary of State for Preschool and Primary Education, Pacheco Francisco, explained that the tutelage has been monitoring the evolution of the pandemic in the country and taking into account the significant increase in cases of covid-19, the ministry found itself obliged "to make this change now at the end of the year" for "fear that the school year would not end on the dates planned," that is, by the end of July.
"This being the case, we are obliged to redo the calendar (...) in order not to give the possibility of suspending classes again, since, in certain classes, they had their beginning very late, as is the case of pre-school which only restarted in April, primary education and transition classes in the month of February, and then it would be a nonsense for us to suspend classes again," said the official, speaking to Radio Nacional de Angola.
He stressed that the Ministry anticipated this change in order to have the possibility to finish the school year and clarified that this change led to a reduction in the number of tests to be done until the end of the year.
"We would have the teacher's test and then the quarterly test," he said, adding that the teacher's test has been simplified and at this point only the quarterly tests will be taken. "The continuous assessments that were conducted throughout this period will count for this," he added.
He explained that the teacher's test was scheduled to take place next week, but given the simplification of the calendar this test has been eliminated. "We have moved the quarterly test to the 24th [of May]. This way, the transition classes will take the tests from the 24th of this month until the 4th of June", he revealed.
