Cafunfo: lawyer of 'Zeca Mutchima' regrets silence of the authorities

The lawyer of the leader of the Movement of the Portuguese Protectorate Lunda Tchokwe (MPPLT), José Mateus 'Zeca Mutchima', lamented this Wednesday the “silence” of the judicial instances, guaranteeing that he will request his freedom to the Public Prosecutor as soon as “the preventive detention ”.

:

According to Salvador Freire, there is no information from the Criminal Investigation Service (SIC) in Luanda about when 'Zeca Mutchima', who has been detained in the capital for almost three months, will go to Lunda Norte to be heard and tried.

"We are taking steps with the SIC, but they are unable to give us a satisfactory answer due to the 'Zeca Mutchima'", said the lawyer in statements to Lusa.

A request for 'habeas corpus' sent, at the end of March, to the Provincial Court of Lunda Norte "was rejected" and the appeal to the Supreme Court "remains unanswered", he said.

"We are thus in 'stand-by' and we do not know when he is going [to Lunda Norte]", he lamented.

'Zeca Mutchima' has been detained by SIC in Luanda since 8 February, indicted for the crimes of "association of wrongdoers and armed rebellion", following the January 30 incidents in Cafunfo, which resulted in deaths and injuries.

According to the police, about 300 people linked to the MPPLT, which has been defending the autonomy of this region rich in mineral resources for years, tried to invade, in the early hours of January 30, a police station in Cafunfo, province of Lunda Norte. In their defense, order and security forces fatally hit six people.

The police version is contradicted by MPPLT leaders, opposition political parties and local civil society who speak of more than 20 deaths during a protest.

'Zeca Mutchima' is appointed by the authorities as the head of the alleged "act of rebellion" which for local citizens was a "peaceful demonstration".

Salvador Freire, who considered himself to be facing a purely political process, guaranteed that he will proceed in June with a request to the Public Prosecutor's Office, "as soon as the term of preventive detention expires", so that his client awaits trial in freedom.

The causidico again refuted the accusations that weigh on 'Zeca Mutchima', referring that the MPPLT is a "peaceful group and never intended to overthrow the Government or divide the country as many people are spreading there".

"Therefore, these are false accusations and we strongly condemn people who have made such accusations lightly," concluded Salvador Freire.
