Angolan fishermen missing for more than three months rescued in São Tomé

Two of the Angolan fishermen missing since January 23rd on the Zaire river were rescued in the sea of São Tomé by fishermen from the archipelago, the Port Authority indicated this Saturday.

:

"Two fishermen left for fishing activities since January, by misfortune their engine fell into the water, they couldn't get back, they stayed all this time at sea and only now they were found by São Tomense fishermen," Maikel Madre de Deus, Second Lieutenant of the Port Captaincy, told journalists.

They were three months and 15 days "adrift, fighting for their lives," explained the military officer.

There were four Angolan fishermen who went fishing in Angola, but only two survived, and ended up in São Tomé. The bodies of the two passengers were thrown into the water by their companions.

The two survivors are in the hospital in São Tomé and have not been allowed to take their testimonies.

"Four of them left for the fishing activity, but unfortunately two died and only two were found," explained the official, noting that the state of health of the two survivors does not inspire care.

One of them "is a little weakened, but the other seems normal and they are in the hospital emergency room under medical care," Maikel da Madre de Deus added.

The Angolan fishermen rescued by their colleagues from São Tomé were with their respective documents and in the next few days may be discharged.

The Port Captaincy said it will hand them over to the Angolan Embassy in the São Tomense capital to arrange "the next steps to be taken.

"They were found adrift by two São Tomense fishermen, were brought to shore and handed over to the captaincy of ports. We will contact the Angolan embassy to determine if they are in fact Angolan fishermen and, if so, the embassy will take care of the rest," said the military official.
