UNITA rejects charges against leader for "not contributing to the clownishness

UNITA ruled out this Tuesday pressing any criminal charges against its leader, Adalberto Costa Júnior, considering that any such action would be "contributing to the clownishness".

"There is a saying that you will not complain the pig to the boar. How is it possible to believe in a judicial power that elects a president of the CNE (National Electoral Commission) fraudulently? Do you think that we would be serious if we took part in a judicial power that acts in this way?", commented this Tuesday the UNITA deputy, Liberty Chiyaka, when questioned by Lusa.

Alleged acts of "tribalism, intrigues and embezzlement" have been attributed to the president of the National Union for the Total Independence of Angola (UNITA), Adalberto Costa Júnior (ACJ).

The "legitimacy and legality" of UNITA's 13th Congress, which elected Adalberto Costa Júnior, and his nationality have also been recurrently questioned, especially on social media, as well as alleged internal dissent against the party president made public by former militants.

Last week, MPLA denied being linked to "the levels of contestation against ACJ's leadership or the internal convulsion within the party," claiming that UNITA was using MPLA to justify "the absolute lack of control it finds itself in.

In the same statement, the MPLA said that it "does not need to pay disgruntled UNITA militants to do whatever it wants" and stressed that it does not see itself in such conducts, distancing itself "in absolute from low-level practices and absolute intolerance such as those that UNITA uses and has always used in its strategy, since its foundation.

The Constitutional Court (TC), Liberty Chiyaka explained, was present at the UNITA congress and confirmed the legitimacy and legality of the 13th Congress.

"[And now] you accept to receive an alleged complaint from a group of citizens who were manipulated by illustrious MPLA leaders. Do you think this is serious?" he questioned.

"Are we going to make a participation to a body like this? We would be contributing to the clowning around. We have a lot of respect for the Angolans, we have a lot of respect for the justice professionals, but we won't bother them because superior orders will prevail, unfortunately, that's it," he said.

For the president of UNITA's parliamentary group, who was speaking at a press conference on Tuesday, the accusations against the president of his party are the result of a "state agenda that involves fighting Adalberto Costa Júnior every day.

The main resources of the state, he said, "are channeled to this perspective: fighting the president of UNITA".

Speaking at a press conference, on the crisis of confidence in public institutions, the UNITA politician considered that the governance of the President, João Lourenço, "failed" and the UNITA leader was the "scapegoat to distract people's attention".

"Because the governance of President João Lourenço has failed, Angolans, society, particularly Angolan youth, identify UNITA and its leader as a credible alternative to the governance of PR João Lourenço and a power management strategy emerges," it said.

UNITA, he further argued, "would be contributing to the regime's strategy if every time an accusation came up we ran out, time makes sure to wear us down, time is the great master".
