UNITA concerned about “setback of press freedom” in Angola

The National Union for the Total Independence of Angola (UNITA), expressed its concern about the "setback of press freedom" and the "concentration of media in the tutelage" of the Government of the country.

"UNITA expresses its concern about the setback of press freedom in Angola, characterized by censorship and self-censorship, as well as the concentration of media in the protection of the executive, which limits the right to information, which is fundamental for the consolidation of the State. democratic right, "said a note from the party's general secretariat, to mark World Press Freedom Day, which was celebrated this Monday.

The main opposition party noted that this year's World Press Freedom Day is taking place "at a crucial time due to the disastrous consequences of the covid-19 pandemic that is plaguing the world".

Even so, UNITA stressed that "it is the duty and obligation of governments and states around the world to guarantee freedom of the press", adding that, in its absence, "societies tend to stagnate, which conditions the search for pressing solutions from their real problems ".

Likewise, UNITA underlined that "the free expression of citizens and journalists plays a fundamental role in the implantation of diversity of thought and opinion in order to better exercise plurality".

Highlighting that journalists are "at the forefront of publicizing and educating society about preventive and combat measures" against covid-19, UNITA urged the executive to "improve objective and subjective conditions to ensure the full exercise of freedom of the press, within the framework of the Constitution and the Law ".

Angola is ranked 103 among the 180 countries that make up the most recent worldwide press freedom index of the organization Reporters Without Borders.
