Covid-19: Africa with 374 more deaths and 11,741 more infected in the last 24 hours

Africa has recorded 374 more covid-19-associated deaths in the last 24 hours, bringing the total number of deaths since the start of the pandemic to 129,719, and 11,741 new infections, according to the latest official data.

According to the African Union Centre for Disease Control and Prevention (Africa CDC), the total number of cases on the continent is 4,799,957 and the number of those recovered from the disease is 4,343,004, up 7224 in the last 24 hours.

Southern Africa remains the most affected region, with 2,060,720 cases and 64,391 deaths associated with covid-19.

The region is home to the continent's worst-hit covid-19 country, South Africa, which accounts for 1,649,977 cases and 56,170 deaths.

North Africa is the second hardest hit region on the continent, with 1,449,260 infected with the SARS-CoV-2 virus and 43,691 deaths associated with the infection.

East Africa accounts for 645,539 infections and 12,641 deaths, and the West African region records 471,974 cases of infection and 6220 deaths.

The Central Africa region has the fewest cases of infection and deaths, 172,464 and 2,776 respectively, and this figure matches the one advanced on Thursday.

Egypt, which is the second African country with the most deaths, after South Africa, records 14,904 deaths and 258,407 infected, followed by Tunisia, with 12,451 deaths and 340,250 cases, and Morocco, which counts a higher number of infections compared to these two countries, 518,122 cases, but fewer deaths, 9134 deaths associated with the disease.

Among the most affected countries are also Ethiopia, with 4127 deaths and 270,527 infections, and Algeria, with 3579 deaths and 127,926 infected.

Regarding the Portuguese-speaking countries, Mozambique records 834 deaths and 70,673 cases, followed by Angola (743 deaths and 33,607 cases), Cape Verde (259 deaths and 29,939 cases), Equatorial Guinea (113 deaths and 8476 cases), Guinea-Bissau (68 deaths and 3756 cases) and Sao Tome and Principe (37 deaths and 2336 cases).

The first case of covid-19 in Africa appeared in Egypt on February 14, 2020, and Nigeria was the first sub-Saharan African country to record cases of infection on February 28.

The covid-19 pandemic has caused at least 3,513,088 deaths worldwide, resulting from more than 168.9 million cases of infection, according to an assessment by French news agency AFP.

The disease is transmitted by a new coronavirus detected in late 2019 in Wuhan, a city in central China.
