Covid-19: Angola registers 22 new cases in the Chinese community

The Chinese community in Angola registered 22 new cases of infection by the new coronavirus between April 26 and May 2, advanced the Chinese embassy in Luanda.

"Some compatriots have let their guard down in preventing the pandemic, which has led to a wave of positive cases this week," after China launched operation "Seeds of Spring" in Angola to vaccinate its citizens abroad, the embassy lamented.

In a statement, the embassy pointed the finger mainly at Chinese who frequented "entertainment venues in a shopping center," where "crowds have gathered to play cards."

As of May 2, there were 115 active cases in the Chinese community in Angola, the embassy said Monday.

Already last Friday the embassy had warned that the lack of care has "put at risk the health and life" of Chinese living in Angola, has jeopardized the vaccination plan of the community and has even prevented some Chinese from returning to China.

The embassy revealed on Monday that a Chinese citizen was this week prevented from boarding a flight to China at Frankfurt airport, in Germany, and forced to return to Angola, after testing positive for the new coronavirus.

Five of the Chinese citizens who tested positive for the new coronavirus last week had already received the two doses of the covid-19 vaccine.

Another 14 patients had received the first dose of the BBIBP-CorV vaccine, developed by Chinese state-owned pharmaceutical company Sinopharm.

The embassy stressed that the effectiveness of Sinopharm's vaccine "varies from person to person" and that there are "no detailed scientific data" yet on the effectiveness of Sinopharm's vaccine against the SARS-CoV-2 coronavirus variants detected in the UK and South Africa.

Data from clinical trials conducted in China and abroad have already shown good results of the BBIBP-CorV vaccine against these variants, Zhang Yuntao, vice president of China National Biotech Group, a subsidiary of Sinopharm, said on March 29.

Health Minister Silvia Lutucuta warned on Monday of the community circulation of the South African and English strains in the capital.
